Ya, that’s right the Ferrari F150. The Italian super-car manufacturer, which is unlikely to ever be confused with the best-selling truck manufacturer, had decided to name its new Formula One car the F-150, in honor of its 150th anniversary. Ford, however, wasn’t keen on this idea and sued Ferrari last month for attempting to capitalize on the F-150 brand. Ford states in their complaint, “Ferrari has misappropriated the F-150 trademark in naming its new racing vehicle the ‘F150’ in order to capitalize on and profit from the substantial goodwill that Ford has developed in the F-150 trademark.”
Ferrari quickly diffused the situation by announcing it will use the full name rather than create any ill-will with the US automaker. The race car will now be called the “Ferrari F150th Italia”. Ferrari further argued, “Ferrari believes that its own contender in the forthcoming F1 championship cannot be confused with other types of commercially available vehicle of any sort whatsoever, nor can it give the impression that there is a link to another brand of road-going vehicle,” a statement said.
We think Ford was actually just trying to make life legally difficult for it’s global rivals Fiat and Chrysler, which own significant stakes in Ferrari.
