The most powerful factory-built Mustang ever just got even more potent. Final certification testing of the Shelby GT500′s 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 shows it will produce 500 horsepower and 480 lb.-ft. of torque – 25 more horsepower than preliminary estimates.
The Ford Shelby GT500′s supercharged 5.4-liter, 32-valve V-8 is a result of Ford’s experience in developing the modular V-8 and V-10 engine series. The engine is force-fed air via a Roots-type supercharger providing 9 pounds per square inch of boost. It borrows the four-valve cylinder heads, piston rings and bearings, from the Ford GT engine.
The 500 hp rating was obtained using the Society of Automotive Engineer’s latest standard and was witnessed by an objective third party. The Shelby GT500′s 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 will be built at Ford’s Romeo Engine Plant in Romeo, Mich. Pricing will be announced closer to launch.
The right to purchase the first 2007 Ford Shelby GT500 was auctioned for $600,000, with the proceeds benefiting the Carroll Shelby Children’s Foundation. The 2007 Ford Shelby GT500 goes on sale this summer. Price still unknown, but sure to be through the roof (hard or soft top) due to high demand and low production numbers.
500 HORSES! Awsome! That’s Ferrari’s power territory. Bye Bye Corvette!…
By PJUZTARIZO. May 3rd, 2006 at 7:08 pmHoly Flying Bat Crap, Batman!!
If SVT had to go, they sure as hell went out with a BIG bang! Guess Ford does have an answer for the Z06. I hope the handling is in the same class.
Jim.
By Langley. May 3rd, 2006 at 7:21 pmI wonder what it will cost?
I’m guessing, if I work for the next, 50 years and pay for it with 100% of my paychecks….it’ll be possible

By Ford Gt Concept » Ford Gt Concept – Ford releases final horsepower rating on Shelby GT500. May 3rd, 2006 at 10:15 pmProblem is it weights 800lbs more than a zo6. Now if it were around 3400lbs then that would be a much better match. 500 ponies is a lot of power though! Maybe one can wreck and I can get its engine? (yeah right)
By 19mach69. May 4th, 2006 at 4:59 amWent to the Dealer, guess the two they were getting are sold, and above the MRSP, Which sucks — now Ford have to make enough to sell to who is willing to part with the cash at the MRSP to buy one and not make it the next collector car — l
By Woody. May 4th, 2006 at 5:33 amThats stock numbers too!!! Imagine a pulley and tune…
By PapaZ. May 4th, 2006 at 6:03 amOnce again ford is doing the same old, same old. Build a car that utterly dominates the class or completely destroys the competition, but only builds enough to say “look what we can do”. Boss 302/429/etc. For every bit of bragging rights a Boss 302 or 429 got in the magazines back then, was trumped by the plain numbers of 396′s and 454′s on the road. I thought ford figured this out with the cheap/quick/hotrodders delight, the early fox mustangs. How many GT 500 do you honestly think you’ll see? About as many as we used to see Boss 9′s I’ll bet.

By Ford Shelby Mustang » Ford Shelby Mustang – Ford releases final horsepower rating on Shelby GT500. May 4th, 2006 at 8:14 pmI went to one of the local dealers last week to ask about their wish list. I would have been #56. Only two are for sure coming in and they are taken at 25k over list. They thought it possible that one more may be coming. My prediction was right. You have to be rich or famous and it wouldn’t hurt to be both to be an owner.
By Jack. May 5th, 2006 at 6:08 amNow imagine just how that’s going to feel when the LS7 gets a boost in two years. 700HP too much for you?
By Vader. May 5th, 2006 at 11:21 amAs always. SVT targets the BASE Vette. But I love when people compare a Mustang to a Z06 Vette though! Its flattering!!!! I am getting the GT500 @ MSRP with my A-plan. My SVT Powerlease has paid off.
And while the LS7 (BlueDevil) is on the horizon, Even less will own one of them. And a chance to get one at sticker is a joke. Not to mention the price tag that comes standard. Now where is that Camaro?
By WILDO. May 6th, 2006 at 5:58 amdamm its about time… finaliy got some real muscle back in a ford car!
By roughrider. May 9th, 2006 at 1:09 pmGET-R-DONE
By roughrider. May 9th, 2006 at 1:13 pmCan’t wait to see the actual road tests.
I love Carrol Shelby!
p.s. 500 horses motor could be a rival to the Corvette C06 (Z06) MOTOR only.. but with the less-weight factor & the awesome aerodynamic design of the C06 (Z06), I don’t think our Shelby can beat it with it’s lower HP/Ton. It just takes more than torque & HP to climb to that limit. Time will tell! And I’m a Mustang fan.
By Zak. May 12th, 2006 at 1:04 amHey, while the Vette Z06 is driven by a 7.0 Liters V8 monster, the SVT GT500 powerplant is just a 5.4L with a lil’ boost as low as 9 pounds. I think Ford SVT has done it again (way-to-go!). BUT the Z06 uses carbon fiber and titanium components to keep its overall weight low, and so it is a high performance sports car not a heavy weight muscle car like our GT500 – so let’s compare it to the new Camaro or GTO. Well, I still believe the 5.0 Cammer motor with 11:1CR N/A is the best motor Ford has ever made: over 1 natural HP per Liter!!
By Duke. May 12th, 2006 at 1:23 amHow can anyone compare a GT500 with a Vette.
By JJW. May 23rd, 2006 at 1:38 pmTry bringing your wife and 2 kids out on a Sunday afternoon cruise in the Vette. After all, isn’t the wife’s approval on a $65,000 investment important. In my house that’s the only form of survival. Besides, ist’s nice to see her out there burning rubber with the machine.
What’s that Vette going to be worth in 20 years anyway?
I have a 67 500 4 sp and can’t wait to get my hands on this bad boy.
By Gene Berry. June 2nd, 2006 at 5:49 am500 horsepower! Oh, yeah. Ooooh yeaaah BABY! Oh I’m ready. Where do I sign?
Good night Corvette/Trailer Trash Camaro! The noise talk is over. Its time to eat it.
By Jay. June 18th, 2006 at 12:58 amWow 500hp! oh wait, it isn’t nateraly asperated, that’s rediculas!!! unlike the sweet LS7 427 small block in the Z06 Corvette that doesn’t need some “super charger” to get 505 hp!!!! I guess that Ford will just always be second to Chevy
By Joe. August 3rd, 2006 at 9:22 pmApples and Oranges should never be compared when it comes to taste… The Corvette and the Thunderbird are the 2 comparibles, however, the TB cannot match the Vette. Both cars have the same amount of room in the back seat. Lets compare Mustangs and Camaros’ Now were talking.
By Soldier Dreaming Big. August 5th, 2006 at 5:18 amyou will need a pistol to get a dealer to sell it for sticker it will go for more so ford sucks making so few
By mike capone. August 10th, 2006 at 5:50 pmI guess “we” will just have to bear the most greatest pain of all. Just like people, all of us are not perfect, Ford has made a perfect product, can you think of any other production model that offers all of what that Shelby offers. Talk to zman, he has had his foot and hands on one, I doubt if anything else compares. Ford will mass produce for USA…
By soldier dreaming big. August 13th, 2006 at 8:03 pmWho really care Ford vs Corvette. None of us, working class people will ever be able to afford one of these gems. Dream On.
By Brian. August 17th, 2006 at 4:30 pmYou fools who keep saying bye bye corvette and the idiot who made the comment about corvette and camaro trailer trash…..You need to pick up a copy of motor trend or road and track where they compare the “supercharged” GT 500 to “naturally aspirated” corvette. The corvette still outperforms the GT 500 with 100 HP less!!!! It amazes me how Chevy makes all their power without a supercharger unlike Ford who thinks a supercharger is the answer to everything. Compare the Ford GT to the Z06. Uh last time I checked, the Z06 was half what the Ford GT is and only produces 50 HP less without a supercharger!! You Ford guys need to go beck to the drawing board and try and make some power without taking the easy way out by slapping a supercharger on everything. If they come out with the supercharged Z06 in 2007 or 2008 like they are planning it will smoke the Ford GT by producing 605 HP…… Uh what’s up now??? Ford just cant seem to outdo Chevy!!!!
By Keep Dreamin Ford Lovers!!!!!!. August 23rd, 2006 at 12:32 pmCompare $75,000 Z06 Vette making 505 “UNSUPERCHARGERED HP” to $150,000+ Ford GT making 551 “SUPERCHARGED HP” One could spend another $1,000 or less and get that extra 46 HP. Why Does Ford have to use a “supercharger” to make any kind of real power????
By Go Back To The Drawing-Board Ford….. August 24th, 2006 at 4:29 amAt 67 I’m probably too damn old to be driving a new S281E, but by God do I love it. Also recently met a newer Viper who didn’t like it and I thing the guy was probably 20 years younger. Just think, 550 hp and it has a back seat!
By Jim C. August 27th, 2006 at 6:49 amYou have to consider the car classes. The mustang was never in the same class as the vett. Its like saying a civic and the mustang are in the same class.. Come on. The mustang and camero are in the same class. Also ford doesn’t spend a large amount of money on large displacement engines. As for throwing boost on a car, you save something called GAS, while the more displacement the more it eats up gas. Chevy lovers just like to pick on Ford for some reason.
By Drew. September 12th, 2006 at 11:20 amI’m a big Ford fan, but i still think chevy has us beat. If Ford wants to make an impression, they should start tuning their 460. Then we’ll see who hauls ass!!
By jELbOMB. September 22nd, 2006 at 6:06 pmPut a 427 SOHC in that shelby GT500 stang and the vette gets torched extremely. Over 650hp bone stock with only two 4 barrel carbs. I saw a guy at the track have one with fuel injection an he got it kicking out well over 700hp.
But they should build a shelby cobra to beat the vette like back in the sixties.
And as for ford sucking. Who copies us when we made the mustang chevy came out in 67 with the camaro and it looked a lot like it. We came out with the SVT team Dodge comes out with SRT. WHO COPIES WHO!!!
You posers!!!
By Brent. September 27th, 2006 at 12:12 pmFord people keep taking about 500hp wow thats really fast… Yeah right, just look at the facts, all that 500hp is Super Charged? The corvette has 5 more hp without a super charged engine. So what then? oh but the Camaro and Corvette are trailer trash? then why can they build a natural asparated engine with 505hp and ford has to supercharge everything they buld to make it that powerful? Trailer trash? at least they look better than the flat mobil. Chevyboy forever . and as for that slow 300hp GT Mustang, you will get yours when the 400hp Camaro z28 comes out to continue kickin your asses
By Curtis D. October 7th, 2006 at 10:08 pmthe vette is superior to the mustang. the z06 beats the lambo gallardo, ford gt, ferrari, and dont even mention the viper. the vette weighs little over 3000 pounds so get that heavy ass supercharged shelby gt500 outta the vettes way. a 427 small block engine. 7.0 liter LS7 motor let alone its unsupercharged v8 putting out 505 hp. oh wait whats the mustang got oh 4.6L supercharged only putting out 9 pounds of boos. damn try agaiin cuz you still wont beat the vette. the vettes has a high redline limit for a v8 which is awesome. the handling is superior. the ferrari is the only one with a chance in that category. let alone the fact you can shift from first to second at 70 mph. to smoke that shit outta the vette you need to either have the bugatti veyron or the mclaren f1. and im talking stock. just wait till the z07 comes out with the supercahrged v8 with 650hp. there even gonna use more carbon fiber body parts to make it lighter to help out with the weight of the supercharger. so ford better go back to the drawing board and get the idea out of there head that there in the same category as this supercar.
By vette. January 2nd, 2007 at 9:04 pmFord has never matched Chevy. The old big block 427 punished Fords back in the 60′s and will do it again with a small block version. As for all this 302 Boss Mustang crap, i recall the Chevy 302 winning the Trans Am during their short production time.
Long live the Bowtie
By Joseph Ledford. February 2nd, 2007 at 9:45 amhey joseph ledford, Vete, and all you others that think dodge and chevy is better than ford. i LOVE all sport cars the corvette and viper are some of the coolest cars but before u go saying a ton of untrue things like how chevy is better than ford maybe you should know the facts. Here you go i got this information from this website: http://www.automobilemag.com/reviews/coupes/0511_z06_gt_viper/stats.html
