If you’re a Ford NASCAR fan, no doubt you know that the Fusion is the body of choice in the nation’s premier roundy-round series. There are eleven Ford-based teams that pursue the Sprint Cup with world-class drivers like 2012 series champ Brad Keselowski, Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle, Ricky Stenhouse, and Trevor Bayne behind the wheel, and all are fastened into the driver’s seat of a Ford Fusion. What you might not realize is how the NASCAR Fusion of 2013 stacks up against the Fusion of 2012, and even the street-going Fusion that’s parked in your driveway. Thanks to our friends over at Ford Racing, we got our hands on these awesome comparison photos and even a video showing off the differences between the aforementioned models.

As NASCAR requires that particular sections of the vehicle’s body must be the same across all brands of body (and they are checked with a template to discourage cheating), there are only certain places that are permitted to be modified. The 2013 version of the Fusion body has been shifted forward on the wheelbase, added more rake to the windshield and cut down on the rear overhang, while extending the rear quarter-panel downward.

In addition, the window shapes have been revised along with the shape of the nose. Since the NASCAR teams all have access to the wind tunnel, we have to venture a guess that some things were found in the previous version to warrant the changes. The 2013 NASCAR ride is 2.3 inches shorter overall, but has gained three inches in width.

This is another telling indicator that the new version is expected to be better than the old, and brings the stock car’s shape and look more in line with the muscular new Fusion design Ford sells to the buying public. Win on Sunday, sell on Monday? We think so – the 2013 Fusion in all iterations is a hell of a ride we’d be proud to own, and a shining example of the ingenuity at FoMoCo.
