Video: How to Properly Abuse a Shelby GT350

Rob Kinnan from HOT ROD magazine got a hold of the #3 prototype 2011 Shelby GT350 Mustang and headed out for a quick test drive in the hills outside of Las Vegas. Fitted with a Ford Racing/Whipple supercharger, the car puts out 525 hp and can break the 19-inch Goodyears loose on command. Kinnan provides an ample demonstration in the video below.

The Shelby GT350 is a post-title conversion package available from Shelby American or one of its authorized Mod Shops. In addition to the supercharger, the car receives an exhaustive list of modifications including suspension, brakes and exhaust, as well as exterior styling and interior upgrades. As the Hot Rod “nice guy” does point out, Shelby has made a creditable effort in restyling the back end of this Mustang, which many have found awkward as provided from the Ford factory.

For 2012, Shelby American is making the GT350 available in a convertible model, as well as in three colors – red, white and blue. The previous year’s model was only available in white. Costs for the GT350 model start from $26,995 for the normally aspirated version and $33,995 with a supercharger installed. The cost of the base GT is additional.

While Kinnan compares the GT350 to his past experiences with a Shelby Super Snake, the points are not overly useful unless you have driven one yourself. Still, it all makes for good video and perhaps we’ll see something more comprehensive in the near future. The good thing about media drives is that you get to beat on someone else’s car, while using up their tires and gas. I’m about to go do that myself, so stay tuned for some upcoming news.
