NMRA Joliet Super Bowl 2011 Same Day Coverage

For the second time this season, the competitors of the NMCA and NMRA converge on the same property for the annual Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing here at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet just outside Chicago. Racers have been met with unseasonably cool temperatures that feels more like October than June, meaning we could see some record performances this weekend. Stay tuned throughout the weekend as we bring you all of the NMRA action along with Sunday’s Super Bowl Shootout against the NMCA contingent.

Eliminations Round One and Two Notes

Chris Tuten had engine troubles this weekend in his familiar Super Street Outlaw machine, while bother Brian lost a turbo on his Drag Radial Mustang. So the BMF crew took the turbo from Chris' car and put it in Brian's and switched it to Super Street Outlaw with Chris driving. Confused yet? Well, it worked as planned, as Sam Vincent was DEAD late and his much quicker 7.27 couldn't run down Tuten's 7.57.
It doesn't happen very often, but Drag Radial top qualifier Sean Lyon blew the tires off at the hit and that was all Brad Medlock needed as he sailed through to a 7.72, 177 mph win. In another matchup of heavy hitters, Jason Lee never had any steam as he could only watch Andy Manson sail to a 7.72 to advance to the next round.
In EFI Renegade, top qualifier Brian Mitchell used an 8.44, low ET of eliminations, to defeat Chad Almandinger's 8.59. On the opposite side of the ladder, alton Clements took a huge holeshot win over Bob Cook who was .220 on the tree, 8.74 to a losing 8.55.
In the second round of the Hot Street/Pro Stock category, Keith Courtney edged Mike Curcio 8.68 to 8.79 after an .024 to .045 holeshot advantage for Curcio, while Charlie Booze Jr. bested Don Bowles 8.54 to 8.64. Courtney will face Robbie Blankenship (above) while Booze will take a free trip into the money round.
In the semis of Super Street/Pro Outlaw 10.5, Mike Murillo's SCT Performance mount made a big wiggle just beyond the tree and that was all she wrote, as Brian Hicks went right down broadway in his Dodge Challenger for the big upset. In the final, Hicks and Nick Scavo will square off for a chanceto race for the ring.

We talk with Chris Tuten about his drama filled weekend.

Chris Tuten has had a hell of a weekend. First loosing the motor in his SSO Mustang, he decided to convert his brother's Mustang from a Drag Radial configuration to Super Street Outlaw by changing the tires and turbo. In the quarter finals, he would luck out against Sam Vincent's .800 reaction time and then again in the quarter finals were Elam would spin and hand the round win to Tuten's 7.633.
In the Kolivas versus MacDonald quarter final, MacDonald would have a hard time getting his Mustang fired and running properly. Johnny Mac limped it to the line but lose to Kolivas' 7.424

Semi Finals

John Urist is headed to another final in Super Street Outlaw as he defeated Andrew DeMarco by a 7.27 to 7.46 count. Standing in his way of another victor is John Kolivas, who spun the tires on his way to a 7.56 ouster of Chris Tuten, who blew the tires off beyond the tree and lifted.
It would bea classic matchup between Tim Matherly and Bruce Hemminger for the Real Street semi-finals. Matherly would hand the win to Hemminger with a 9.315 to Matherly's 9.462. On the other side of the ladder, Dan Baumann would take the bye run to the finals against Bruce Hemminger.

There as some smack talking going on in the staging lines prior to the Factory Stock semi-finals as John Leslie Jr would take on John Leslie Sr. As you can see by Sr's sideways launch, he would spin off the line and hand the round win to his son with a 11.208 to a 12.008.
Brandon Alsept downed Brad Carroll, 10.21 to 10.58 in the Pure Street semis to advance to the final, where he'll meet Shawn Johnson, who earned a bye into the final.

Robbie Blankenship has been the silent killer in Hot Street weekend - staying low key and winning rounds. If consistency is in question, Blankenship went .001 slower in his semi qualifying pass then his winning run against Charlie Booze. At the stripe, Blankenship would barely nudge out Booze with a 8.552 to a 8.588.
The typical final round between Tim Matherly and Bruce Hemminger didn't happen this weekend as newcomer Dan Baumann came in to mix things up in Real Street. Baumann reset the national record with a 9.189 for the number one qualifying spot and took it to the finals to take out hard charger Bruce Hemminger on a 9.61 to Hemminger's lifting 12.801.
Another close battle between two very consistent competitors in Renegade. In the end, Brian Mitchell was able to nudge out Alton Clements with a 8.477 to 8.565 pass.
John Leslie Jr. has had a picture perfect weekend in Factory Stock. First, he picked up the rain out win from Atco and then backed it up with a final round Joliet win over Sylvester - a 11.174 to a 11.237. Leslie will jump into the number two spot in points, though Carlos Sobrino still has a pretty decent lead as number one in points overall.
John Kolivas is two for two for the year in Super Street Outlaw and two for two in Joliet. While not the fastest in all the eliminations rounds, he had the consistency it took to take home the number one spot over John Urist with a 7.177 to a 7.292.

NMRA Versus NMCA Super Bowl Race

Superbowl Shootout Video – The NMRA Wins Again, 8-5!

The NMRA nabbed another win as Pure Street champ Brandon Alsept launched wheels up and ran a 10.23 that Mean Street winner Alan Von Ahnen could not catch with his 10.05.
NMCA representative Don Baskin downed Robbie Blankenship in a spectacular heads-up race on a holeshot, an 8.56 edging out a quicker 8.54.
Due to an issue with the original runoff where John Leslie Jr. mistakenly got a .500 tree, the Factory Stock winner and Nostalgia Super Stock champ Douglas Poskevich re-ran their run for the ring. But like the original result where Leslie went red, Poskevich once again took the win as Leslie spun the tires and didn't have enough steam to get the win, a 12.01 downing an 11.11.
Xtreme Street winner Bill Trovata lined up alongside Real Street winner Dan Baumann, and at the stripe, Trovata was able to run Baumann down after a second and a half head start, running 8.01 to a 9.44.
This one brought down the house as Manson blew the tires off at the hit and it appeared that the young Jeff Lutz Jr., who was the only racer to sign up on the NMCA side, was headed for a huge upset victory. But just past half track his machine erupted in a ball of flame and death smoke and Manson blew back past for the win, 8.11 to 10.79. Lutz is out of the car and okay, but the same can't be said for his engine.

Nostalgia Pro Street representative spotted EFI Renegade winner Brian Mitchell just over a one second advantage, but was late off the line and had a big wiggle at mid-track, allowing Mitchell to cruise on by for the win for the NMRA, 8.53 to a 7.47.

NMCA Super Street winner Nick Scavo was broken and unable to make the call, nor were any alternates available, giving Super Street Outlaw champ John Kolivas a free pass and a win for the NMRA to the tune of a 7.18 at 201 mph.

Mike Murillo rolled back to the line to wage battle for the NMRA in Pro Outlaw 10.5, while Dan Stevenson is back on after Randy Adler encountered mechinical woes and could not return. Murillo has a 6.63 to 6.08 handicap. And chalk up another one in an exciting pairing, as Murillo leaves first with an .037 light and both drivers blast on through the scoreboards with Murillo running 6.71 at 221 mph to Dan's off-pace 6.31 at 228 mph.

For the second time this season, the competitors of the NMCA and NMRA converge on the same property for the annual Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing here at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet just outside Chicago. Racers have been met with unseasonably cool temperatures that feels more like October than June, meaning we could see some record performances this weekend. John Lesie Jr. was all smiles yesterday after he made the quickest pass ever in Factory Stock at 10.883 at 123.50 in the opening round of qualifying which is more than a tenth and half quicker the #2 Carlos Sobrino. John remains atop the field afte the first two sessions and looks like the man to beat this weekend.
There is no car in the NMRA smoother than Sean Lyon's Drag Radial machine, and he made another on-a-rail lap last night to move to the head of the pack with a 7.60 at 187.55 mph. Jason Lee and Brad Medlock are locked together in second and third with runs of 7.616 and 7.617, respectively.

We talk with Bruce Hemminger and his Friday engine woes

Brandon Alsept will lead the Pure Street field into eliminations compliments of a great 10.204 at 131.73. Shawn Johnson is just a few ticks back at 10.23.
Alton Clements and the rest of the EFI Renegade field at chasing leader Brian Mitchell, who has nearly a tenth in the bag with an 8.38 at 161.23. AJ Wyce anchors the seven-car field with a 9.02.
Charlie Booze Jr. was unable to unseat Robbie Blankenship from atop the Hot Street/Pro Stock field, meaning he'll start eliminations from the second qualifying spot with an 8.47. Keith Courtney and Don Bowles trail with runs of 8.54 and 8.55.

Johnny Lightning talks about tuning with SCT and his new BOSS 302

Remaining Eliminations Round 1 has been rained out for today

Team mates Tim Matherly and Jim Breese faced off for the first pair of Real Street cars during the first round eliminations. It would be a close race, but Matherly would pull it off on the top end with a 9.417 @ 145.45 mph to Breese's 9.538 @ 142.61. Bruce Hemminger with his freshly rebuilt engine would beat a lifting Matt Bell with a lifting 9.781 @ 118.21. Dan Baumann would pull out the win over Baldwin with a 9.428 @ 143.49.
Alton Clements set low ET of the round when he took out an out of shape Muth with a 8.540 @ 158.74 pass. Almandinger would nudge out Bart Tobner with a 8.595 to 8.782 pass. Number one qualifier Brian Mitchell would take a solo pass to advance him to the next round. Bob Cook would take a single win against a no show Wyce.
Sean Lyon reset his own record in Drag Radial with an amazing 7.533 @ 188.15 blast to take out Johnson. Medlock would win over Cavallo with a 8.630 to a 9.506.
Jason Lee would be second quick with a 7.631 @ 181.54 to take out Pachar's 8.971 @ 178.17. Manson would take out new comer Lutz who is still creeping up on his combination.
John Leslie Sr would take out Factory Stock veteran Mike Washington with a 11.882 @ 115.23 to a 12.859 @ 86.22. The semi final round will be a Leslie Jr and Leslie Sr - battle of father versus son. Carlos Sobrino won barely over Campbell with a margin of victory being .088 at the stripe. Sylvester would take a broken bye against Jay Dold.
Brandon Alsept took his number one qualifier advantage to the first round with a competition bye. Carroll would take out a spinning Anderson with a 10.459 to a 11.202. Johnson would take out Drew Lyons with a 10.175 to a 10.626.
Don Bowles' Maverick broke on the burnout, although rather unconspicuously, but a redlight by Ben Mens handed the wounded "Coal Digger" the win. Robbie Blankenship advanced and will receive the bye in round two, while Keith Courtney will face Mike Curcio and Charlie Booze Jr. will meet Bowles, if indeed he can return.
This photo pretty well tells the story of the evening. After persistent sprinkles that weren't quite enough to halt the racing, the skies opened up just as Super Street Outlaw was rolling out from under the tower and after an hour delay, the call was made to pull the plug. We'll start tomorrow with the first round of Pro Street and continue through the order from there.

Brad Medlock is here in Joliet hoty off a win at the NHRA Unleashed race in Tulsa two weeks ago to compete in the tough Drag Radial category and on the quarter mile for the first time. Medlock has been 4.82 with an 88mm turbo strapped to his 400 cubic inch powerplant, but has had to swap to an 85mm unit for NMRA battle. The stock suspension ride sports an aluminum block with D3 heads and a TCI Powerglide transmission with a PTC torque converter.
Greenfield, IL racer John Wellenkamp is making his NMRA debut in the Super Street Outlaw category with a gorgeous new Mustang, powered by a Flyin' J Race Engines-built 436-inch powerplant fed by an F3 ProCharger. The 25.5-chassis'ed car features a stock style suspension underneath and has been 5.0's to the eighth and 8.30 to the quarter mile in testing since it rolled out of the chassis shop last August.
Former NMRA champ Johnny K is in the house for some Super Street Outlaw action with his familiar turbocharged Mustang. Although not as likely as the five-second for the Pro Street guys over on the NMCA side, the first six-second pass in SSO isn't completely out of the question, especially with the likes of Tuten, Urist, and Vincent on the property.

We talk with John Kolivas about his SSO campaign

A.J. Powell brought out his Super Street Outlaw Mustang (which is still for sale) this weekend and made a god opening lap of 7.74 at a coasting 144 mph during morning testing.
A.J. Allmendinger clicked off an 8.62 at 161 mph in testing this afternoon aboard his Renegade Mustang.
Mike Winters (far lane) hung the hoops high and even popped the hatch open in his Mean Street ride during testing this afternoon.

Jason Lee explains what it takes to be on top both 275 classes in the NMRA and NMCA

Maryland 275 Drag Radial champ Andy Manson ran a nice 7.67 during testing.
That's the bottom side of Travis Franklin's Super Street Outlaw Mustang, and that's his transmission sitting on the pavement. The guys were a little busy to chat, but they appear to have a busy afternoon ahead of them.
Put this one in the "boy, do I wish" category for John Urist, as Pro Street racer Alex Viscardi took out the timing blocks, giving Urist a false elapsed time and speed.

Qualifying Round 1

Jason Lee made another of his patented 330' wheelstands and was forced to lift, rolling through to an 18.21 to anchor the field after one round of qualifying. Newcomer Brad Medlock nailed down the quickest run of the round with a 7.61 and is closely followed by Andy Manson at 7.63 and Sean Lyon at 7.69.

Robbie Blankenship charged to the top of the pack in the combined Hot Street and Pro Stock category, running a nice 8.44 at 154.49. Charilie Booze Jr. is right there in second with an 8.47.
Mike Murillo continued where he left off in Maryland with another great performance to lead the combined Super Street and Pro Outlaw category with a 6.66 at 222.11 mph. Street car legend Nick Scavo is a tenth back at 6.76, while Tony Nesbitt is third at 6.77 and Tim Essick sits fourth with a 6.86.

We talk with Mike Murillo about the highs and lows of his 2011 season

The 'woah' of the round went to Dan Baumann's booming 9.189 @ 147.29 mph pass to put him atop the ladder in Real Street. Just incase you aren't sure what the class SHOULD run, the remaining three contenders were in the .40-.50 range. There was no doubt that Dan was going to be torn down after such a stellar pass.
Two years ago former NMRA champion John Kolivas showed up with a set of drag radials on his Mustang in Super Street Outlaw and took home the record. Shortly after, drag radials were banned from SSO. In 2011, Kolivas is back with the true 10.5s on the car and has broken yet another SSO record. Kolivas went a 7.059 @ 202 mph for the number one spot. Now the big question is, when will SSO break into the 6s?
John Leslie Jr. has come a long way with his new combination. The mod motor-powered Fox body Mustang is the only one like it in Factory Stock... and it's paying off for John. A test pass earlier in the day netted a 10.80 pass for John, which he echoed in the first round of qualifying with a 10.883 @ 123.50 mph - even with a little bit of tire spin off the line.
