BOSS 429: Engine Build and Dyno

BOSS 429: Engine Build and Dyno

Now, to document the heart of the BOSS 429 Project…building the BOSS 529 Engine.  This was made possible by Jon Kaase Racing developing the BOSS 429 Heads and Intake in 2010.   Jon made these heads to fit a BBF 460.  So, with a stroker crank, you can get to ~520 cu in.  With the cylinder bores cleaned up, I ended up with a 529 cu in engine.  Brent Lykins, co-owner of B2 Motorsports, LLC performed the engine build.

To start with, I order the Jon Kaase Racing BOSS 429 heads, intake, valve covers, valves, and rocker arms and had them dropped shipped to Brent, B2 Motorsports.  The pictures below highlight the various parts and build process.

Jon Kaase Racing BOSS 429 Hemi Head.... it's massive!

Here's the Forged H-Rods and Forged steel stroker crank being laid out for mockup. Then the Crank is off to the shop for cleanup and balancing.

To help with scale, just look at the size of the intake ports with Brent's hand in one.

In this shot, the H-Rods are married up the the Diamond forged Pistons. The Diamond Pistons are a piece of art! Too bad theyr'e hidden in the engine.

the lower assembly is in place

Here, Brent is "Driving Home" one of the Diamond Forged Pistons and H-Rods to it's final place of rest.... or should I say "action"

Now the focus in on the BOSS's top assembly

With both BOSS 429 heads installed, next comes the intake and valve covers

The completed engine ready for Dyno day. I met Brent at Jon Kaase's shop on July 5th for our Dyno day. Brent is preparing to load the engine onto Kaase's Dyno.

Getting close with the BOSS 529 strapped into the Dyno and about ready to be fired up.

We're off. The engine is running, warming up and being prepared for first hard pull

Jon Kaase himself is checking the numbers. He first complements Brent for building a fine engine, followed by the numbers. Jon's key note to use was.... with the pull RPM range of 3400 to 6100 RPM, "the enginge never dropped below 600 ft lbs of torque." That's insane power!!

Here's the final results and the numbers are incredible. Peek Torque of 700 ft lbs @ 4850 RPM and 740.3 HP @ 6050 RPM. What a Monster!

Brent was drilled by Kaase and his team on the details of the build as they really liked what he did with this streetable BOSS 529 build and the power it made.  Jon Kaase then took us and his team to lunch while the engine cooled down.  Kaase and team contined with build questions to Brent.  It was obvious Brent “did good” on the BOSS 529 custom build!

It was a GREAT day!

Up next…. readying the car for suspension and engine install.
