One of the cool things at PRI is all the new cars that get unveiled at the show. Racers and shops put in countless hours to have their new car ready for a grand debut at the event. This year at PRI Street Outlaws New Orleans star Shane Lester unveiled his new street terror “Da Hellion II” and this 2003 Cobra looks like it will more than live up to its name.
Shane has never been much of a track racer, it never appealed to him at all. “Different people like different types of racing, and racing at the track has never been my thing, I’m usually only going there just to do some testing. I like the heads up racing, run what you brung and hope you brung enough and I can get that on the street,” Shane explains.
The need for the new car came about for Shane after things didn’t go as according to plan on season one of Street Outlaws. “I got my teeth kicked in during season one when I had issues with the other car. This new car is going to change the game, people are going to get to know it and nobody will want to get beside it that’s for sure,” Shane says.
Da Hellion II is based on a Chris Alston 25.1 chassis with a double frame rail added in. The body is a composite unit based on a 2003 Cobra Mustang, and was made to look like the original Da Hellion. The name of the game with this new snake is lightweight so Shane could add weight wherever he wanted to if needed. On the outside of the car Motor City Solutions provided the carbon fiber doors, hood, dash, and other parts. Silwa Composites added carbon fiber for the wing and all of the interior.
The lightweight theme continues when it comes to the suspension of the Mustang. “The car has a very unique rear suspension designed by Jeremy Adkins from Bad Habits in Detroit. It’s a swing arm rear suspension, so it has no anti-roll bar or wishbone. The two lower control arms are made together, and it’s got one shock that comes into the car,” Shane explains.
Shane likes to keep his cards close to the vest when it comes to the engine in his stunning Mustang. Under the hood is a 5.4 based Modular Ford motor that has a set of Ford heads ported by RGR.
Bringing the boost into the mill is a Sullivan intake with a Wilson Manifolds intake elbow. The boost comes courtesy of a Gen 3 102mm turbo from Precision. Nitrous Outlet provides two kits of giggle juice, while everything gets its orders from a FAST ECU.
Getting this car done was a huge task and Shane is quick to thank those who were involved in the process. “Scott Travis from Travis Motorsports built the car from front-to-back with the exception of the body. We did the body at my shop Precision Paint and Body, and my guys put in countless hours making this thing perfect in a short amount of time. We built this car from the ground up in just four months,” Shane says.
After final prep is done on the car you can be sure it will see action on the next season of Street Outlaws. “I really can’t get into the details on what the car will be doing on the show just yet. This is a grudge car that we plan on taking a lot of people’s money with. We wanted to do a total monster of a car on a small tire, something that would just decimate everybody. I didn’t want to get ahead of the curve, I wanted to start a whole new curve that would make everybody else faster,” Shane explains.
Look for Shane and his evil new creation to start making some noise in the grudge world, along with hurting some feelings on Street Outlaws very soon!
