By the turn of the millennium, the Ford Mustang was beginning to look long in the tooth despite a 1999 model year update that hardened the edges of the New Edge pony car. But an all-new, totally fresh looking Mustang was just around the corner, though Ford took its time teasing out its all new (and uncontested) American muscle car.
The 2003 Ford Mustang GT and Convertible concepts ushered in the Age of Retro, bringing the Mustang into the 21st century by looking back to its humble beginnings. The droptop concept is up for grabs, reports Carscoop, with ExoticClassics.com asking an unspecified price for the one-off Mustang.
There are no specs available on the V8 that sits between the front fenders thought it appears to have been borrowed from the Lincoln LS or Ford Thunderbird, which is also likely the source for the chassis. In fact we remember many of the Mustang faithful being up in arms about the idea that such a combination would be in play for the next gen pony car, though obviously the powertrain and chassis were just necessary for Ford to show off styling, which is what concept cars are all about.
The concept has just two seats instead of the Mustang’s usual four. The 2003 Mustang Convertible Concept was auctioned off during the Ford fire sale in 2009. Back then the concept sold for $175,000, and with the Mustang once again on the eve of a major makeover, it could be prime time to buy and sell such a unique vehicle.
While it can’t be registered or driven, it is the predecessor and inspiration for arguably the best-looking line of Mustangs since the original debuted. The S197 line also gave us the fastest, most-powerful Mustangs ever, and this unique, hand-built concept will be an incredible addition to any Mustang fan’s collection. But has it gone up in value since 2009, or down? Tell us your high bid in the comments below.
