Australians may be losing their domestic auto industry, but for Ford fans at least there have never been so many powerful performance options. Already, enthusiasts had the turbo-six Falcon XR6 and 5.0 wielding XR8, and with the arrival of the 2016 Mustang GT and Mustang EcoBoost, there’s a bounty of horsepower up for grabs.
While trading the Falcon for the Mustang might be a tough pill to swallow for some, one of the perks of the Mustang’s arrival turns out to be lower service fees than the Aussie-built sedan. CarAdvice reports that the first year of service for the Mustang will be between $50 and $130 cheaper than the comparable Falcon. That’s in dollarydoos, not greenbacks, mind you.
The 2016 Mustang GT will cost Aussies $290 for the first 12 months of service, while the EcoBoost is $10 more expensive at $300 for the year. Compare that to the Falcon XR6, which cost $340 per year and the XR8 at $420, a $130 premium over the V8-powered GT. In the second year the service fee disparities go even higher between the GT and XR8, with the sedan costing $300 more to service in year two and $185 more in year three.
Why? Probably something to do with globalization and taking the Mustang worldwide, we imagine. The Falcon is a holdover from the days when it was simply cheaper to build cars in Australia, rather than import them, but these days the inverse is true. That doesn’t mean consumers always get left out though, and hundreds of dollars in service fee savings is nothing to turn your nose up at.
