With a pair of Pure Street championships, multiple race victories, and national records on his resume in the NMRA, Brandon Alsept is undoubtedly one of the most successful all-Ford racers in recent memory. But when the NMRA dissolved the category at the end of his 2011 championship run, it left the Cincinnati, Ohio native at a crossroad in his racing endeavors.

With the NMCA’s Mean Street category looking interesting enough, Alsept packed his bags, so to speak, and headed the NMRA’s sister organization in 2012 with his Dynojet-backed Ford ’98 Mustang.

In just his second NMCA start, Alsept stole one from reigning series champ Jeremy Gillam in Atlanta when he muscled his way around Gillam’s starting line advantage to score a 9.91 to 9.96 triumph. Gillam won every other event on the calendar but that one, however, in a major turn of events, a technical infraction discovered at the Milan event put Gillam out of contention for the remainder of the season.

That put Alsept and his Dynojet machine, with a commanding hold on the second spot in the points standings over third-place Doug Johnson, squarely in the drivers seat for the Mean Street championship.

Alsept wasted little time solidifying his newfound stature atop the category, as he disposed of Shawn Johnson and Brian Campbell on his way to his second race victory of the season at the Milan event.

With one race remaining, Alsept is currently 375 points behind the idle Gillam in the championship points. With his win at Milan, Alsept tallied 600 points, so it’s certainly a distinct possibility he can run down the leader, but it will take a strong showing at the finale in Indianapolis.
