The Mercury Cougar was once called “the gentleman’s muscle car,” and for good reason. It quickly established itself as a comfortable-yet-powerful ride at a time when most muscle cars were focused on cramming bigger and bigger engines under the hood. Supple vinyl seats, wood-ingrained dashboards, and sexy females all helped move these Mustang-based muscle cars, and today they’ve still got a small-but-fanatical following.
Many of these guys are looking to restomod their own Cougar’s with modern-day Mustang components, and up on eBay is a fully-restored 1970 Cougar in Grabber Blue coupled with a supercharged DOHC Cobra engine, just waiting to be installed.
The DOHC V8 engine is a very wide motor, and cramming these engines into a Mustang or Cougar requires extensive front end modification, which has already been done on this particular Cougar. With over 500 horsepower on tap, the supercharged DOHC motor and 5-speed TKO transmission come wrapped up and ready to install into this incomplete restomod. The seller claims that he began with a full restored car (at a cost of $30,000) and his since invested over $65,000 total into this incomplete project. One look at the interior tells us that, while far from stock, the previous owner has made the Cougar’s gentlemanly aspects even more appealing with a modern look.
A Ford 9-inch rear end, 3:73 gears, custom fuel cell and headers, a push-button start system, power windows an intercooler and much, much more are all part of the sale. However, this project still needs a custom driveshaft, a wiring harness, and all the little details that will make it a road worthy cat once again. There is so much potential in this unique ride that, had we the money, we’d do right by this ride and finish it proper like. Cool ride, , or overdone and overpriced?
