In the early and mid 1980s, long before anyone had uttered the words SVT, or Cobra R, there was SVO, and their pet project the SVO Mustang. Many of you are familiar with how the SVO rivaled the Mustang GT for horsepower, and surpassed it in handling. What you may not be aware of is that the SVO was also available with a rare option package known as Competition Prep.
The Comp Prep option stripped nearly every extra from the SVO, including air conditioning, power windows, power locks, cruise control, and more. The idea was for a showroom stock racer aimed at SCCA competition. A bi-product of the Comp Prep package was that it actually reduced the price of the SVO to a point that brought the normally expensive specialty car price down to compete with Mustang GTs of the day. This stands in contrast to what Ford did with Cobra R models, which sold for nearly double the sticker price of a regular Cobra.
In 1985 only 42 Comp Prep models were built, making this version of the SVO ultra-rare, and to the right collector something of extreme value. Regardless of value, these cars are exceedingly rare, in-fact your editor, who has a penchant for rare Fox body Mustangs has yet to see a real comp prep in person.
We found this Comp Prep on eBay, item number 121282837848 with “stealth” modifications according to the owner. These include a camshaft from a Ranger, new head, a bleeder valve for the turbo waste-gate to get more boost, larger throttle body, and a few other items.
Inside thee car has also had much of the upholstery replaced, and the exterior has been restored as well. The seller also states he has most of the original parts which could easily be put back on the car.
We have seen a resurgence in interest in the SVO Mustangs and prices reflect this. The Comp Prep cars being so rare it’s difficult to firmly estimate their value. If you have $14,950 laying around though, this looks to be a nice one, and a possible future collectible. Happy Bidding.
