When the Mustang was released in 1964, few imagined that it was the start of a legacy. A legacy that lives on 50 years later with the 2015 Mustang. A survivor 1964 Mustang has turned up for sale on eBay. The car is well preserved and shows how the stallion has evolved over the last 50 years.
Powering this Stang is the famous 289 HIPO motor which is mated to a 4-speed manual transmission. A little known fact about the ’64 is after 91 days on the market the car was recalled because the HEHP transmissions kept blowing up. This Mustang comes equipped with an installed RUG-E 4-speed, but the removed HEH P Top Loader comes with it as well.
The 289 HiPo has a few light mods, these are an MSD Ignition as well as an Edelbrock intake manifold and carburetor. In 1964 the 289 was the top of the line performance option for the Mustang. Despite it’s small displacement, it left the factory with 271 HP and 312 lb-ft of torque. It was easy to tune and was able to compete with mountain motors.
While a new Mustang will be handed the torch from Ford, this Mustang will be remembered as the one that gave birth to a ever lasting legacy.
