The NMRA’s Coyote Stock class has to be one of the hottest new drag racing classes on the face of the planet. As powerplant development is controlled by the Ford Racing class-spec engine, costs are contained for the racer, allowing the race to plan further out with the cost of “keeping up with the Joneses” who might otherwise be tempted to spend tens of thousands of dollars on engine parts and performance. North Grafton, Massachusetts resident Evan Dumas is one of those racers – a longtime crewmember for NMRA Street Outlaw racer Andrew DeMarco and Renegade racer Jim Coger, Dumas recently purchased the ’87 GT DMC Racing-built proven chassis from the team at Mike Dez Racing with plans to convert it into a Coyote Stocker for the 2014 season.
The car originally competed in the old NMCA Street Race class with former owner Phil Hefron at the wheel and has been sitting for a couple of years since then. After Dumas attended the NMRA event at Maryland International Raceway with Coger back in May, he realized that the chassis would fit in for exactly what he wanted to do – take his shot at Coyote Stock. “I’m shooting to be testing by the end of this season so that when I come out with it in March the car’s ready to rock – I don’t want to drive all the way to Bradenton and look like an idiot. We should be able to get enough time on the car to get the chassis figured out and be ready to go for next year,” he explained.
This class appeals to the average guy, and since Dumas has never raced in competition before he’s exactly the racer the NMRA is after.
“It seems to just be getting bigger and bigger, and since it’s a maintenance-free setup with the spec engine, the biggest problem seems to be keeping the transmission together. I won’t have to be buying engine parts or blower parts or anything like that – the biggest expense seems to be fuel for travel. I’ve only done test-and-tune and racing on the street, so this is my first shot at sitting in the driver’s seat. I’m lucky to have some help from Mike Dez from Dez Racing and Dennis MacPherson from DMC Racing, and my friend Mike Z of Mike Z Customs will be repainting the car black since I hate the red, but for the most part I’m doing this on my own,” said Dumas. We look forward to seeing him in competition.
