The Ford Mustang has been lusted over for decades by our friends and allies in Western Europe, and it took the Blue Oval 50 years to finally make the iconic pony car easily available in the Old World. But it has been well worth the wait, especially for Mustang buyers in the U.K. who finally have access to a right-hand drive version of the Mustang.
Ford has announced that it has delivered the first 1,000 right-hand drive Mustangs to the U.K., though it still has another 2,500 orders to work through before the Blue Oval can claim to be all caught up.
Production of the right-hand drive Mustang began late last summer alongside the standard Mustang at the Flat Rock Assembly Plant. At the time Ford had around 2,000 orders for the sixth-generation Mustang, of which about 80% were for the 5.0 liter V8, and 55% of British Mustang buyers opted for the six-speed manual transmission over the automatic. Those Brits do have great taste, after all.
Despite delivering its first 1,000 Mustangs, the waiting list in the U.K. has only continued to grow, and it’s the same story in Australia. Buyers from the Land Down Under may have to wait a year or more to take delivery of their American pony car, as the popularity of the now-global Ford Mustang has seen orders pouring in from nearly every market. The Mustang was recently declared the best-selling sports car in the world due to its tremendous popularity,
It’s a good problem for Ford to have, though it may behoove the Blue Oval to increase production and decrease wait times for loyal fans.
