Over the last decade, perhaps no team has been as consistent (or dominant) in the Mustang drag racing world as John Urist’s Team Hellion gang. They’ve wrapped up eight championships in one of the more difficult classes to compete in – the NMRA’s now-defunct Super Street Outlaw class – while competing with a second car in the NMRA’s Pro Outlaw 10.5W class. The 10.5 car has been parked, and they are off to embark on a new venture, taking on the Pro Modified world with a proven driver and team.
Jerry Bickel Race Cars has been commissioned to put together a state-of-the-art 2012 Ford Mustang chassis that will accept the 500 cubic-inch Ford Racing big-block Pro Stock engine that wears a set of Pro Stock Hemi cylinder heads. The engine will be boosted by a pair of Precision Turbo Gen-2 88mm Pro Mod turbochargers, which proved themselves worthy of Pro Mod performance this past season in cars like Don Walsh’s Pro Mod ride.
A carbon fiber Roush body will ride atop the chassis, which is expected to be put into service this spring in time for the 2013 season. Although they are stepping up into the Pro Mod world, the team will continue to run the championship-winning ’93 Mustang in the NMRA’s new Street Outlaw category with Urist in the driver’s seat of both cars.
Hellion Vice President Dwayne James explained, “I was going to run the engine in Super Street 10.5 but with most of the Pro Mod rules carrying the same engine size restrictions for turbo engines, it made sense to just install it in the new car and park the Super Street ride. It’s time to step up our racing program. I have always wanted to field a Pro Mod, as it is a stable class that allows us a lot of different racing opportunities all across the country.”
