Ken Block and Hoonigan Racing cohort Alex Gelsomino needed a good showing at the Rally America Ojibwe Forest Rally in Minnesota in order to keep their hopes of taking the 2013 series championship alive and did just that, taking home the win with 13 stage wins over 15 stages at the two-day event.
The very first stage of the rally saw Block and Gelsomino take a win on Friday afternoon, which set them up for the rest of the weekend. Their first-on-road opportunity that was pulled during the pre-race seeding helped, and by the end of Friday night they held one minute, two second lead over the second place team.
Two stages during Saturday’s day session found more of the same, and by the time the rally was over, Block was able to lock down the first-0verall win through both his skills and the fact that some of the other top competitors had mechanical issues.
“I’m really stoked with how this rally went for us this weekend,” said Block. “Historically, I’ve had some really bad outings here at Ojibwe. This is the first time I’ve actually finished the event, so it feels awesome to not only beat the competition, but to sort of beat the rally itself as well! Plus, with this win, we stay in the hunt for the overall 2013 championship. It all comes down to LSPR now in October and I can’t wait.”
The season-ending event at the Lake Superior Performance Rally will take place over the weekend of October 18-19 in northern Michigan – Houghton, MI to be exact – and should be a barn-burner as Block and company look to wrap up the series title for the season.
