Up until today I was having a hard time getting motivated to go out to the garage and work on Project ’67. Even though we’re in California overnight temps in the winter do hit freezing and an uninsulated garage is simply not an inviting place this time of year. Today I picked up the perfect solution, a propane shop heater. I’ve messed around with the electric types before, and they simply don’t generate enough heat to make a difference in large area like a garage or shop. These propane heaters on the other hand will make you so toasty you’ll be turning wrenches in shorts and a tank top. This is a Coleman 45,000 BTU heater, which cost about $80. It sits on a standard 20lb. barbecue style propane tank and has an ignitor. In a two car garage I only need to run it for a few minutes to warm up the space. Be careful though, these types of heaters consume oxygen, to burn the propane, and produce carbon monoxide as a by product of the combustion. You need to make sure your garage or shop has a sufficient amount of incoming air so that the oxygen in the room isn’t depleted, otherwise you’ll be taking a very long nap. Google propane shop heater for more information.
