Before there were any tracks in America, hot rodders raced on the streets and backroads. These was a brief period in the 1950’s and 60’s where it seemed like there was a race track in every town, but those days have long since passed, and many tracks have fallen into disrepair. This has lead to an increase in street racing, a dangerous past time with sometimes fatal results.
Austin News KXAN reports that over the weekend, two Ford Mustangs participated in a contest of speed on the highway when one of the Mustangs collided with a Jeep, killing the driver.
The details are few in this tragic story, though what has been pieced together is that there were two Mustangs, a blue one and a yellow one, racing on Highway 183 around 1:30 pm last Saturday. The two cars were racing at speeds in excess of 80 mph when a Jeep Liberty SUV pulled on to the highway in front of the blue Mustang. The driver died, and his passenger was injured.
Right now police are looking for the driver of the yellow Mustang which apparently is wanted for failing to stop at the accident. It goes to show just how dangerous street racing is though. It’s hard enough some days to avoid an accident just trying to commute to work; racing on the highway endangers you and those around you. Our hearts go out to the victim’s family, but hopefully somebody will read this story and think twice about stomping the accelerator on the highway next time.
