Before the Ford Mustang had even launched in Australia, the Blue Oval opened the ordering books and quickly secured thousands of orders for the all-new global pony car. By the time the first Mustangs arrived in Melbourne, the waiting list was already 3,000 customers long, with a wait time of up to a year.
Even after Ford pledged to increase Mustang output and make an additional 2,000 vehicles available for Australia, the waiting list has grown to 6,000 people, reports News.com.au. If you were to place an order today, you wouldn’t get your Mustang for at least 18 months, though there may be another way to skip the long wait, albeit temporarily.
Ford has made available a small batch of Mustang’s for Hertz’s Australian operations, reportedly numbering just a few dozen. At a cost of $150 per day (that’s Aussie dollars, mind you), those wanting to take the new pony car for a spin rather than waiting 18 months have this option available…if they can find it, that is.
Although all the rental Mustangs wear GT badges, the relative scarcity means that fans will have a hard time finding one to take on even a short jaunt through the Outback. Why is it so hard to get a Mustang in the Land Down Under? Simply put, the new Mustang is the best-selling sports car in the world with over 140,000 worldwide sales in the past year alone.
There’s still a waiting list in markets like the U.K. and China too, and unless Ford drastically increases production, these long waits may become the status quo.
