Police in Buckeye, AZ, have a new tool in their efforts to reduce aggressive and drunk driving. With a grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, the department purchased a 2011 Mustang GT for unmarked traffic enforcement use.

Officers Larry Buchanan and Erik Halim have had the car for several weeks now and have made a number of arrests for aggressive driving, DUI and criminal speeding, Buchanan confirmed to Jackee Coe at The Arizona Republic.

While the performance of the GT is important in their duties, additional technology is installed to assist their Equipped with a Kustom Signals Directional Golden Eagle II Radar, the vehicle has antennae installed at both the front and rear. This allows an officer to be stationary and monitor traffic in both directions.

The Mustang is also equipped with a dash top camera and microphone for recording purposes. The camera unit is equipped with GPS data and event recording so that, for example, the officer can mark a location on the fly. This is used to note the position where someone may have thrown something from a vehicle so that the officer can return to the exact position at a later time and retrieve the item.

Mustang GTs are in use for unmarked patrol duty in a number of other states, including Florida and Indiana.
