SCCA recently started a new show room stock class called B-Spec. This class allows for cars such as the Ford Fiesta, Mazda 2, Chevy Sonic, Hyundai Accent and others to compete on more of a level playing field. The tight rules ensure that wins can’t simply be bought by the team with the most money.
Diecast Playcars and Fabrication owner Rudy Ludeke is no stranger to racing. Ludeke has been racing since the age of seven and has wheeled all manner of vehicles. When he got wind of the class he purchased a new Ford Fiesta and began construction of what has been dubbed project Jefe`(the Boss). He documented the build and now the car’s efforts on Fiestracing.com, and we’ve got the highlights here.
First order of business, strip the interior of nothing not needed to race and build a roll cage.
Weight is placed by SCCA in the cars to further level the playing field. SCCA tells drivers how much and where to place it. Ludeke and his crew did the smart thing, and first stripped the car of anything unnecessary for racing.
All cars are also required to have a six point GT and production car roll cage. The team made theirs removable to ease servicing the car. In theory this would also ease the car’s transition back to street duty if so desired.
Modifications are limited to safety, a SCCA approved K&N filter, cat back exhaust, and SCCA approved shock and spring combination.
Other safety equipment that was required on this build included front and rear tow straps, a Kirkey racing seat for the driver, and the requisite six point safety harness. A fire extinguisher must also be in place.
Performance is extremely limited in B-spec with restrictor plates installed by SCCA. Peformance wise the engine is only allwed a K&N panel filter, spec’d by part number from the sanctioning body and an aftermarket cat back exhaust. Jefe` managed to spin the dyno rollers to the tune of 117 HP at the front tires.
The only suspension changes allowed are via the shock and spring package approved by the sanctioning body, which in this case came from Bilstein. Wheels and tires are also spec’d by SCCA.
You can follow the exploits of Jefe` and Ludeke’s team at the Fiesta Racing home page, and also on Facebook.
