During the 2012 racing season, the NMRA’s Strange Engineering Coyote Stock class broke new ground in the world of heads-up racing. The class rules center around a ‘spec’ engine that can be purchased through any Ford Racing Performance Parts dealer. It’s a 5.0L “Coyote” engine that comes in sealed form and requires a specific engine control pack in order to be considered legal for the class. The advantage to racing in a class like this is containing engine development costs, as every racer is working with the same base program.
2012 class champion Joe Charles has been one of the most vocal supporters of this innovative racing class, and when the offseason debate around the inclusion of an automatic-transmission weight break came into focus, Charles led the charge against the idea. However, once it became apparent that the break was going to be included in the rules package for 2013, Charles moved to action, enlisting his current crew chief and longtime friend Paul Dishroon to put together a second car to campaign as part of the MV Performance Coyote Stock team.
“I have been very vocal on the NMRA board about my disdain for the weight break offered to the C4. It may shock a lot of people that we are going to run it in this new car. Well, to be blunt, we want to know exactly what the combo is capable of running,” Charles explained.
Car owner Dishroon is no stranger to drag racing himself; in addition to performing crew chief duties for Charles this past season he’s also a former member of Pro 5.0 racer Derrick Smith’s crew – drag racing is in his blood.
“Joe and I got started talking about the weight break for the C4 and he said how it was really sticking in his craw, so I suggested maybe building a car to see what we could do with it. He talked to Tim Matherly at MV Performance, Tim and Joe put their collective resources together, Harvey and the guys at Performance Automatic are going to help us out, and we’re just going to get out there and stir the pot. It’s been a few years since I’ve raced in competition at this level. I’m pumped,” Dishroon said.
Jason Harvey from Top End Fabrication in Soddy Daisy, Tennessee, will be working to make the car Coyote Stock-legal and the team plans to be out testing by the beginning of February. C&L Racing and UPR Products are also on board to sponsor the team. You can check out the HiPo Joe Charles Racing Facebook fan page and learn more about MV Performance here.
