Some supercars just aren’t super enough for some people. An entire industry has sprouted up around making high-performance cars perform even better, as it takes a lot of knowledge to tweak these awesome automobiles. That means handing your baby over to somebody else. Unfortunately for Ray Hofman, his dreams of owning an even more super-supercar were dashed when his tuner of choice, Bill Knobloch, crashed his modified Ford GT.

That was back in October, and according to Jalopnik that car has since been run through the insurance companies, and wound up at a salvage auction. Even in its all-but-unrepairable condition, the car still went for $40,000.

As you may recall, the tragic story of the heritage-painted Ford GT began with an innocent visit to a tuner shop. Bill Knobloch was the ill-fated tuner, who added twin-turbochargers to the 5.4 liter Ford GT and took it out on a test drive. While the circumstances regarding the accident are still unknown, the car is believed to have gone airborne 60-70 feet from the road.

Whatever the circumstances, a rare and expensive car was crashed and basically ruined. At $150,000 brand new, Hofman invested about another $50,000 into the twin-turbo system Knobloch built him. The car does not come with keys, it doesn’t run, and its all but ruined. Still, the engine could be salvageable as it is mounted in the middle of the car. The transmission might still be alive to, and while most of the outside of the car is wrecked, maybe a desk chair could be salvaged from this mess. Maybe it is just the start to some wild mid-engine project, but whatever the case it’s sure that this car will go on living in some form or another.
