VIDEO: SMS Motorcars to Go ‘Black Label’ and More

From car makers repeated lessons about naming car models, we now have a market whose nameplated are mostly filled with meaningless combinations of numbers and letters, and even a little punctuation from time to time. While some evocative names remain, embarrassing gaffes in the past have tended to over-restrain those responsible for establishing brand identity.

All this could be responsible at some level for the popularity of personalized license plates these days.  After all, there’s so much more you can do when your vanity plate says more than your car’s name.

Rather like fashion designer Ralph Lauren, American Express credit cards  and whiskey distiller Johnnie Walker, whose names have been parlayed into multiple labels from the realistically priced to astronomical, Steve Saleen will introduce three labels for his cars — white, yellow or black — with starting prices from $33,000 to more than $150,000.

The entry-level white label car would still come with Saleen’s suspension system, brakes and up to 440 horsepower among other features. Supercharging is reserved for those at the yellow version. In the hands of a very few, his black label version, will arrive fully equipped, possibly with a number of custom options available.
