If you frequent wrecking yards then you have been inconvenienced more than once by tight restrictions that forbid customers from bringing certain items into the yard. While on assignment, we have been told politely that cameras are not allowed on the premises. Although we are not quite sure why cameras are not permitted, one restriction we’ve never questioned or challenged is the policy about bringing jacks into the yard. In fact, at many “you-pull-it” type yards, factory jacks are removed from vehicles before they even enter the yard. Why? Might you ask. For your own safety. Since most wrecking yards are on imperfect surfaces, accidents can happen easily. The following unfortunate story should be a reminder to all of us who use wrecking yards that working alone can be especially dangerous. Consider bringing a friend, keeping a cell phone close-at-hand, and giving your target vehicle a good bump before you dive underneath.
Reported in the Cincinnati Enquirer on December 22, 2005 –
The body of an Erlanger man was found at Bessler’s Auto Parts in Hebron Wednesday at 10 p.m.
Initial indications are that he died when a car he was removing parts from slipped off of a jack and fell on him, according to Boone County sheriff’s spokesman Tom Scheben.
Michael Tala, 33, of Erlanger, left his home at approximately 10 a.m. to go to Bessler’s U-Pull & Save salvage yard to obtain parts for his Toyota MR-2, his wife, Liletta Tala, told authorities.
She and family friends found Tala’s van on the lot at Bessler’s later in the evening and notified authorities at 8:50 p.m., Scheben reported. The yard is at 2412 Petersburg Road in Hebron.
Sheriff’s deputies and members of the Hebron Fire Department searched the yard using police dogs and a thermal imaging unit.
The FordMuscle staff would like to extend their condolences to the Tala family and hopes additional awareness among fellow do-it-yourself auto enthusiasts can add some consolation to their situation.
