Project: BOSS 429 – Paint Complete

I picked up the BOSS 529 from Chris Collier of Panama City, FL. Chris did a fabulous
paint job…. Show quality! All the graphics are painted, not decals.
The car in now back in my shop and the “real” fun begins.
Chris had to make me a custom hood scoop. You might recall the pictures from earlier posts of the carb/aircleaner sticking up through the hood. The original BOSS 429 fiberglass hood scoop was our starting point, as it wasn’t big/high enough to set over the aircleaner.

The base scoop had to be cut and raised 1". This made the hood scoop look way too high. So, I had the idea from the design drawings to add the "fin" extensions to the base scoop to elongate it all and help give the illusion that it's not as tall as it really is. Regradless, it's huge and bigger than I'd like it to be, but with the monster BOSS 529 under it, it had to be. I think the current saying is, "it is what it is".

In this shot, you can see I had Chris incorporate the turn signal ports from the original Boss 302 hood scoop.

Here's some of the first pictures after painting and during polishing. Take note on how nice the engine bay and firewall came out.

Here's some final shots of the finished paint before loading into the trailer to take home. Note: The hood scoop is just setting on the hood and note screwed down.

Front Right shot

Right rear shot. You might recall the name of the car is SHOTGUN from previous posts. When Ford was developing the Boss 429 Hemi enginge, the code name for the project was Shotgun. So, I incorporated the SHOTGUN name on the trunk and hood on either side of the hood scoop.

Left qtr shot

SHOTGUN

As you can see, my graphics on the car came from several years and models. The Hood and Trunk from a Mach 1, the reverse "C" side strip from a '69 Boss 302. Not only do I like the combination, but even the new 2013 BOSS 302 has the reverse "C" strip. All the graphics are painted on with a special satin finish product. It came out well.

Setting safely in my shop.... the real fun begins!

So, wish me luck and I’ll keep the updates and status coming.
Regards, Mark

That scoop looks way to big for the car, you really aught to cut that thing down in height. I wouldn’t go any taller then what I designed for the Boss Snake. Just a word of advise design wise.

Keith… I absolutly agree… bu’t it’s as low as it can go. The top of the air cleaner is about 1/2″ from hitting the scoop and the aircleaner has the max drop of 2.5 “… BTW, i even looked at getting a lower height air cleaner element, but thet won’t work either because with the 2.5″ drop the top of the carb itself is within 1/2″ of the top of the aircleaner…. So this is it. Must say, the scoop looks bigger in the photo then it is… I think becase the car is setting high now and the camera angle?…. Thes big enginges !!

Mate, I’ve been following your build with much interest and i know you’re having difficulties keeping everything covered but I have to say that scoop looks horrible. Way too big and ugly. I’m sorry, I hate to be negative but its just wrong. Have you considered just hanging the engine out the hood? I’ll totally understand if you tell me to butt out – its your car and its totally up to you how you do it, but I just had to comment.

John… thanks for the comment…. but it’s just the air cleaner. There’s not much else I can do….. But I’m still considering other options. Stay tuned. I’ll be able to tell more once I have the engine back in the car… Maybe a week from today…. but no more than 2 weeks. Over this past weekend, I did all the suspension and framerail bracking. Those pictures coming shortly.

Hey there, I’m really sorryabout this, but man, that hood scoop really detracts from the beauty that is your car. I know you have it all finished but really fill those holes in the hood get rid of those fins completely and bring that scoop back to an oversize version of the stock 429 scoop.

Really i know what its like to think something looks ok because of the deadlines of finishing, then finally tossing the idea because funds were limited. Then realizing that there was a better solution down the road!
You have such a beautiful car going here that i guarantee that you’ll regret leaving the scoop that way.

Beautiful car! How about a reverse tear drop hood off a 63.5 Galaxie?

    Rick Garrett says:

Hiya Mark, I know I’m late to this thread and the super tall scoop but for that sweet ride have you considered building a bigger shaker hood set up? That way it’s sitting right on top of the carb and there’s no clearance issues. I think it would look really good on that 70.

      Mark Kassab says:

Yes, we tried that. I was able to lower the carb another inch doing some drilling and tapping directily in the intake manifold and dealing with some spacing issues with the bottom of the aircleaner and the top of the distributor/plug wires….. The next step is cutting the air scope and droping ~1″. Not much else I can do…. Stay tuned
