Cloyes Performance Products has a number of new products on display at PRI, focusing on a Ford Cobra Jet 4-valve Modular timing kit and the company’s Z Series timing sets that fit the GM LS engine, small-block Ford, and small- and big-block Chevrolet.

The Hex-A-Just Kits for the Ford 4.6L and 5.4L 4-valve engines feature a complete set of chains and sprockets. The pair of fully adjustable billet camshaft sprockets, billet crankshaft sprocket, and fine-finished chains makes up the primary timing components.

The secondary components consist of four 9-keyway secondary sprockets, two single-keyway secondary sprockets, and fine-finished secondary chains. This kit allows the engine builder to quickly and easily adjust cam timing to maximize engine output.

Product development manager Jason Thompson says, “This kit gives the engine builder everything he needs, even an extra secondary sprocket that helps reduce the center-to-center distance on race-only versions of the engine that don’t use a tensioner. There are also two crankshaft sprockets to choose from depending upon the reluctor wheel used in the engine.”

The new Z-Series kits for the overhead-valve engines (SBF, SBC, LS) use an exclusive chain design that offers 33 percent more overall strength than Cloyes’ current premium chain design, and is the no-compromise offering for serious racing engines.

The double-roller Z-Chain is constructed from high-strength steel that uses a proprietary heat-treat process to increase the fatigue and break strength of the chains. Stress risers are reduced in the chain design, which helps to stop fractures that can occur under a severe load.

According to Thompson, “These kits are designed for racers who are constantly testing the engine’s limits on harmonics. Everyone’s going to lightweight crankshafts and aggressive camshafts, and the Z-Chain features press-fit center links that can endure fatigue and vibration better.” These features all work in conjunction to provide greater overall strength.

The Z-Chain timing sets are race-proven in applications exceeding 1,200 horsepower with valve spring pressures approaching 800 lb./in. open. Each hand-matched timing set is available in two designs – Cloyes’ patented infinitely-adjustable Hex-A-Just system, along with the Race Billet, which offers incremental adjustability.
