There have been studies done that show luck is more about observation and attitude than some guiding cosmic force that rewards or punishes people seemingly at random. While we’d agree there is something to that research, when it comes to the lottery, it is all about luck, no amount of observation is going to give you the clairvoyance to pick the winning numbers.
Sometimes though cosmic karma and luck combine to grant lottery winnings to those who can really use the money. The CBC News reports that the Canadian lottery recently awarded $2 million to an impoverished couple, who went out and replaced their bicycles with a brand new Shelby GT500.
Wayne and Mary Hiltz were living on Canadian government assistance in a small, low-income apartment. Mr. Hiltz was known as “the man on the bicycle” because he couldn’t even afford a car. Mind you, this is in Canada, where everywhere is cold. We can’t imagine the range of emotions he must have gone through upon discovering he won $2 million.
Hiltz’s purchase of the lottery ticket was truly fortuitous. Initially, Wayne had gone into the store to buy cigarettes, but his usual brand was out. So instead of cigarettes, he bought a $20 lottery ticket, which won him that $2 million. Talk about a stroke of luck.
It seems like Wayne is hanging onto his humility though. He’ll be hanging that old bicycle in his garage to remind him of where he came from. It’ll be right next to the Shelby.
