ARP Releases 2013 Catalog With More Parts and Tech Info

The new 2013 ARP catalog is now available, and it’s a worthy addition to any gearhead’s library. The latest edition is 108 pages, four more than in previous years. 

This full-color catalog isn’t just a listing of applications and part numbers — although there are 250 new part numbers and more than 3,000 total stocking numbers. It also includes a 28-page tech section filled with advice, in-depth explanations and interesting interviews. Some of the topics include:

• Is the term “aerospace quality” overrated?
• Recognizing common failures of fasteners
• Differences between 8740, 4340 and ARP2000
• Custom-made fasteners
• Glossary of technical terms
• Torque recommendations 

Some of interviews and Q&A sections go into extreme detail to explain fastener engineering and dynamics. One story titled “Motorsports Fastener Engineering for the Non-Engineer” was written by Dr. Kenneth Foster. While the start may be a little intimidating with complex math formulas, the story flows into a comprehensive explanation of bolt design, construction and notes on failure analysis. That’s followed up by an engineering discussion from metallurgist Russell Sherman titled, “Metallurgy for the Non-engineer.” Russell discusses such factors as toughness vs. brittleness, the definition of Rockwell hardness, elasticity and cold-heading vs. hot-heading.

Some of the stories more relevant to engine builders include “Proper Fastener Retention” and “The Importance of Proper Rod-bolt Stretch/Torque.” These are hands-on stories that go into detail on installation and maintenance bolts, including using a torque wrench and stretch gauge. There are also step-by-step how-to stories on installing cap- and OEM-style rod bolts.
