In 1964 the Sanford Ink Company launched the “Sharpie”, its first pen-style permanent marker. Since then the Sharpie has become something of an institution, known both for its permanence and its seemingly endless practicality. Over the years Sharpies have even become the tools of well-known artists trying to do something different.

One such artist is Chris Dunlop AKA Pinstripe Chris. Over on his blog Pinstripe Chris takes a Sharpie to everything from purses to helmets. His latest project was a 1999 Ford Mustang that has a killer Sharpie design covering it from front to back.

The graffiti-like design on this white Mustang is one-of-a-kind, a truly unique and imaginative project that pushes the envelope of what we consider a custom car. Chris invested over 50 hours of his time, and untold numbers of Sharpie markers, to “tattoo” this American muscle car. The seamless design really pops on the white body of the Mustang, and we think this might be the beginning of a new fad.

Pinstripe Chris is far from finished though. His next project will be a Sharpie-inked Camaro, and we’re interested to see if any other Mustang fans out there some up with Sharpie pinstriping designs of their own. Chris made the design extra-permanent thanks to a layer of clear coat and wax, and this Mustang will be prized and praised for many years to come.
