The latest generation of Ford Mustangs has proven to be the best yet, meshing advances in modern performance technology with a dash of retro and nostalgia by bringing back famous names like Shelby and Boss. One name that has absolutely dominated the drag strip since its return is Mustang Cobra Jet.  The Mustang News reports that production of the 2013 model is already under way.

Just last week the first steel bodies arrived at Watson Engineering for the first stages of fabrication, going from lifeless husks to Mustang Cobra Jets, the most fearsome Mustang in the whole lineup. While Ford will never say how much horsepower these motors really make, on the strip the Cobra Jet can rip single-digit times with ease.

A limited number of Mustang Cobra Jets are being built, and just 50 were sold to the public. Ford is also offering for sale a few sealed crate engines from the Cobra Jet (in both naturally aspirated and supercharged flavors).

The photos from Ford Racing include pictures of frame reinforcement, the first roll cages being installed, and weight-saving maneuvers like rook skin gussets. After all the body work is done though, these future Cobra Jets will be shipped back to the Flat Rock assembly plant where they’ll be fitted with their 5.0 liter engines, C4 transmission, and all sorts of other performance goodies. We can’t wait to see the new Cobra Jet Mustangs in action on the drag strip once again.
