Ford Motor Company’s pony car, the 2015 Mustang, is now going “Secretariat” on the competition. In case you didn’t know, that means that this pony car is stretching its legs and galloping lengths ahead of the competition. For the past five years, the Chevy Camaro seemed to have more time in the lead, but now the tables have turned.
Now that we are making our way into June, it is clear that the newly redesigned Mustang has been a hit among enthusiasts globally. Thanks to Bloomberg, we know that since the end of May, 56,571 Mustangs have been purchased, an impressive 55 percent increase from this time last year. On the flip side, the Mustang’s biggest rival, the Camaro, has seen a decline in sales with just 33,982 vehicles sold since the end of May. That’s a 13 percent decline in sales from this time last year.
The Ford Mustang recently reached its 50 year anniversary which called for a redesign with a whole new global platform dubbed the S550. Even the base model Mustang can give you about 300 horsepower for under $24,000, which isn’t a bad deal at all.
With the introduction of the Ecoboost turbocharged four-cylinder inside of Ford’s pony car, some traditionalists were not happy, even though a turbo four-cylinder was once offered. Remember the ’84-’86 SVO? The car is still putting out impressive horsepower numbers, and the almighty V-8 is still being offered with a manual transmission. Line-lock is a new feature being offered for those ready to line up at the drag tree, and is a great way to warm up those tires in the burnout box beforehand.
The Camaro is trying to get back on top, but Ford’s sleek redesign is keeping it ahead of the game. Chevrolet has introduced their all-new Camaro which is 200 lbs. lighter than prior models and will also be adding a four-banger turbo powertrain to the lineup. The top-of-the-line Camaro will have 20 more horses than Ford’s top pony, but even the always third place Challenger is galloping up to the Camaro’s sales figures with 30,166 sold through May, which was an increase of 38 percent.
As of now, the Ford Mustang is the American pony car to beat!
