Let’s be honest about the day and age we live in. Increasingly it seems like morality and common decency take a backseat to the bottom line, and many automakers have sullied the good names of classic performance cars. Dodge Charger, we’re lookin’ at you, and no we still haven’t forgiven you for the four-door look.
There was concern among Mustang enthusiasts that Ford, in its effort to “go global”, would turn the Mustang into something it wasn’t, or make it too “European” for American tastes. MLive reports that comments from a Tuesday conference call with a Ford exec reveals that the Blue Oval will let the Mustang “speak for itself”, and that topping the sales chart isn’t the primary goal.
Since the debut of the fifth-generation Camaro, the Mustang has placed consistently in second place behind the Bowtie-wearing muscle car in monthly sales. Despite a well-received refresh and a 662 horsepower Shelby model, the pent-up demand for Camaros has kept Chevy on top of the Mustang. Only this past summer did Mustang sales finally catch up with the Camaro, after so many years of lagging behind. So when Ford started talking about taking the Mustang to places like Europe and Australia, there was concern that it might get too small, or even lose its V8 engine option.
With leaked photos pretty much revealing what we all already know though, it seems clear that Ford has built the 2015 Mustang for fans and enthusiasts. Ford’s Erich Merkle said the company “really excited about it” and believes “the market will be excited about it as well.” As for getting back on top of the sales chart? While Ford would be “happy” to see that, the Blue Oval is “not going to do whatever it takes to get there.”
That’s a refreshing change of tone in a world where the bottom line is all that seems to matter anymore.
