With the recent release of the new 2015 Mustang soundtrack, the distinct sound of the Mustang call has been preserved with a few enhancements. Ford’s goal in developing this new generation of sound was to create a sports car that is distinctly Mustang with modern updates and refinements.
Sean Carney, powertrain noise, vibration, and harshness engineer for the Mustang approached this task handed down to him, much like a composer of a great orchestra does by simply musically arranging the Mustang sound. Carney’s mission was making sure no matter what engine is installed every Mustang resulted in achieving the well-recognized call of the original pony. He composed a soundscape that stays with the traditional voice of the pony yet enhances the sound of the driving experience.
With the focus to rid the backdrop of unwanted noise Carney and his diverse team of engineers worked with the product development crew to craft a more refined background for the Mustang line up. With three engines that include a new turbocharged EcoBoost 2.3, the 3.7-liter V6, and the iconic 5.0-liter V8, Carney and the supporting team set out to deliver three distinct yet similar sounds that connect with one another and display a commonly shared DNA in the Mustang heritage.
Using computer simulation tools much like a producer in the studio would the Ford team rebalanced frequencies to improve unwanted noise control and improve upon the beloved unique sound of the Mustang roar. With the Mustangs stealthy new design and profile, this aided in reducing lift, drag, and wind noise. The new body design also provides for a strong foundation in the reduction of road noise and mechanical chatter in the cabin area.
