Detroit has hosted the North American International Auto Show for decades now, and it’s seen as a magnet of automotive design by the entire world. So you can bet any design award associated with the Detroit Auto Show carries a whole lot of weight, and the only officially sanctioned awards at any NAIAS is called the Eyes On Design Award.
Every year Eyes On Design awards one production vehicle and one concept vehicle making its worldwide auto show debut, which put the 2015 Ford Mustang in the running. The diverse judging panel naturally picked the Mustang as winner of the production award, while the Volvo XC Concept was named the best concept.
It’s easy to see why the 2015 Mustang won, as Ford has sculpted an entirely new look for a car that seemed stuck in retro mode. While the Mustang finally shares a corporate grille with the rest of the Ford lineup, designers managed to integrate the look in a fierce, intimidating way. Some were worried Ford’s plan to sell the Mustang overseas would soften the look, but this is clearly still a Mustang through and through.
From the strong shoulders granted by the fastback body style to the three-dimensional LED taillights that have to be seen in person to be appreciated, the 2015 Mustang is a design we’re sure will become a fan favorite in short order. This bold new look moves the Mustang forward without forgetting its heritage or its fans, a balancing act that only Ford could accomplish.
