Earlier this year, the automotive industry lost one of its greatest icons. We are referring of course to Carroll Shelby, speed enthusiast and father of one of the most legendary cars ever created, the Shelby Cobra.
Today, Ford, the Friends of Carroll Shelby, and Shelby American jointly unveiled a car to honor the life and legacy of the late Shelby. The car, a 850 horsepower Shelby GT500 Cobra features a wide body kit, a distinct look, and enough power to turn tires into melted rubber in mere seconds. It is, in a sense, the ultimate tribute to Carroll Shelby.
Starting with what is undoubtedly the fastest factory GT500 ever produced, Ford and Shelby American engineers turned the 662 horsepower 2013 GT500 into an 850 horsepower monster. The car reportedly represents Carroll’s own interpretation of a modern Cobra, a successor to the car that launched his career as one of the best known and most successful sports car builders ever.
Other features include a specially designed hood and a custom Guardsman Blue paint job with Wimbledon White stripes. This modern Cobra rides on unique 20-inch wheels, and a larger 4.0 liter Whipple supercharger is part of an engine package that increases the already-bonkers horsepower number by almost 200 ponies.
It is a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to the pursuit of horsepower. This GT500 Cobra will tour the country, raising money for causes that were near to Carroll Shelby’s heart, and we wouldn’t be surprised if it eventually wound up on the Barrett-Jackson auction block.
