Artists have their painting canvas. Writers have their books or blogs. And gearheads? They have cars of all types. A car can be just as much a reflection of its creator as any book or painting. It isn’t always the go-fast types that get into cars either. These days many people are modifying their cars to run alternative fuels, or to take on new high-tech gadgets like iPads This has always been true, and plenty of Ford Mustangs have been customized in interesting ways.
Hemmings Auto Blog came across what can only be described as one of the most unique Mustangs ever made. It isn’t even the hydrogen fueling system that makes this ‘67 Mustang so crazy as it is the drive-by-joystick system from the 1980’s. K.I.T.T., eat your small-block out!
As Hemmings tells it, this Shelby-nosed ‘67 Mustang started life as a ho-hum S-code Mustang that, along with 1968 Shelby GT350 wound up in the hands of Lindle Willey. During the early 1980’s, when gas costs soared and alternative fuels were being touted by many, Willey decided to swap the 289 for a 390 engine designed to run a hydrogen generator developed by him. So yes, this might actually be the cleanest-burning Mustang ever built.
But that isn’t even the crazy part. The crazy part is that Willey installed a joystick-control system in both Mustangs that controlled speed and turning. Along with the joystick came a bunch of small 80’s televisions and a car-phone. Apparently the joystick system in the GT350 can even control the ‘67 Mustang. It’s the ultimate green Mustang gamer geek car.
