The 2005 redesign for the Ford Mustang was a retro revolution. For the 2010 remodel though, Ford toned things back with a shapelier, more modern design. Now the 2013 re-remodel of the S197 chassis is about to hit dealerships, and while there was a whole team of engineers and designers working on it, we have one man in particular to thank for the sexy redesign of the Mustang.
His name is Darrell Behmer, the Chief Designer behind the 2013 Mustang. The Mustang News has some background on Mr. Behmer, and how he became the driving force behind the 2013 Mustang redesign.
Behmer is a second-generation Ford designer, and he has a long history with Mustangs in general. Behmer’s father took him to see Parnelli Jones race his 1970 Boss 302 Mustang, and Behmer was able to tap into that when he undertook the 2013 Boss 302 project. From there Behmer was charged with the 2013 Mustang redesign.
No stranger to pony cars, Behmer bought his first Mustang in conjunction with his father in 1964. In his 28 years at Ford, Behmer has worked on many other projects, among them the Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX. But the Mustang has an important meaning to Behmer, like most Mustang fans, and he has delivered a memorable model for the last generation of the S197 platform, that much is for sure.
