The 1980’s saw a resurgence in automotive performance technology that let auto enthusiasts put some power back into their rides. Alas, that meant that all too often the police would find themselves falling further and further behind criminals in much faster cars. Enter the Ford Mustang SSP – or Special Service package – which from 1982 to 1993 served as a highway interdiction unit for police departments across the country.
These cars have become quite collectible in certain circles, and My Star Collector Car brings us the story of one man and his mint condition Fox-body Mustang SSP.
Once police departments no longer need a certain vehicle, they usually sell or auction the car off to recoup some of the operating costs. Gord Holdcraft came across one such ex-police vehicle, a Mustang SSP, which he says was in better-than-expected condition. Though the rear-end was swapped out for something beefier, this Mustang SSP is in pretty good condition.
This old Oregon Mustang SSP may find a second life on the drag strip
Even so though, the Mustang, which once belonged to the Bend, Oregon Police Department, even came with the old lightbar in the trunk. Holdcraft has some interesting plans for this old cop car though. He is considering a 351 Windsor swap to give the ol’ girl a bit more power in the hopes of taking it down the drag strip. That might offend some lovers of the SSP, but as far as we’re concerned nothing can change the fact that this old Fox-body was once the long (and fast) arm of the law.
