Car accidents are still among the leading causes of death of Americans, especially when it comes to the very young (and very old.) Thankfully, modern safety features have lessened the blow and saved many lives in the process…though there are only so many scenarios that a car maker can plan for. For example, how does one protect the occupants of a car that is cut in half?
In this case, the tried-and-true seatbelt was what saved 26 year-old Veronica Castro. The Contra Costa Times reports that Castro’s Mustang was cut in half when a speeding driver hit her in the rear, separating the front and back of the Mustang.
Castro, a teacher at a nearby school, was on her way to work and attempting to make a left turn in Woodland Hills, California. Without warning, a 21-year old driver of an unidentified Honda hit her Mustang in the rear, shearing everything off everything behind the doors, including the entire rear seat. Luckily Castro was unharmed and walked away from the accident, as did the driver as the other car.
The Mustang, however, is kaput. The rear end ended up slamming into another car, and the Honda came to a stop 120 feet from the accident. Witnesses say the driver of the Honda may have blown a red light, and was almost certainly speeding. That’s one more Mustang gone, and one more lucky driver saved by the simplicity of a seat belt.
