The natural progression for muscle cars is for them to get bigger, meaner, and faster. So far, the factory has obliged, delivering us the most powerful versions of classic muscle cars like the Camaro, Challenger, and Mustang ever conceived. Yet there is always more power to be had, and while 1,000 horsepower may seem outlandish, more and more street cars can hit the road with that many ponies under the hood with no problem.

To prove that, American Muscle and 5.0 Magazine judged the “King of the Street” competition, where Mustang fans from all over the country brought their 8-second street cars to try and take the crown for themselves.

Many Mustangs came and competed, but only one could be crowned King. Six categories were used to judge these Mustangs. The categories were Horsepower, which is self-explanatory, Ride & Drive, which judged how the car felt, Fit & Finish, or the quality of the work on the car. Engineering, Popular Vote, and of course Drag Race rounded out the categories. Seeing as how most of these Mustangs made between 900 and 1,000 horsepower at the wheels, the competition was bound to be tight.

Mustangs from many different generations showed up, from the contemporary-classic Fox-body to some pretty sweet Shelby GT500’s to twin-turbo Terminator Cobra’s. Still, we can’t imagine having to choose between all those sweet rides just one winner. Who won remains a mystery, at least until the May issue of 5.0 magazine. Until then, we think we’ll root for the turbocharged Fox-body…just because.
