If you thought the environmental and mileage standards in America were tough, just check out Europe or Australia, where increasingly stringent regulations are putting the damper on performance vehicles. Ford Australia’s famed Falcon sedan was one such vehicle that did not meet upcoming emissions requirements, though Ford has recently committed to keeping the Falcon for at least another 5 years.
How will they do it? Simple; EcoBoost. GoAuto reports that Ford will drop the Falcon’s inline-six engine for an EcoBoost four-banger that will deliver an 18% increase in fuel economy without sacrificing performance.
Governments the world over are preparing for a world where oil is increasingly scare and costly, requiring automakers to churn out more fuel efficient and less polluting cars. This includes large sedans like the Falcon, which in piror years received an inline-six cylinder motor which made less power and got only about 23 mpg.
The new 2.0 liter EcoBoost engine will give the base Falcon a torque boost, and push mileage to about 29 mpg. Not bad for a big sedan! In fact, the base Falcon with EcoBoost will out-torque any of the competition. It is too bad Ford never decided to bring the Falcon here to America, where it would have sold in droves. And now they tease us with an EcoBoost version. Oh Ford.
