Boosted Voodoo: ProCharger’s New Shelby GT350 Kit Is Here

It’s no secret that we like to think of ourselves as forced-induction fiends, what with being fans of the Mustang platform (and knowing these engines love boost). Needless to say, when we found out that our good friends at ProCharger were in the testing and development stage of its Shelby GT350 supercharger kit; well, you could say we just about went bananas over it.

But can you blame us? The Shelby GT350, with its 5.2-liter, flat-plane-crank-equipped Voodoo V8 engine, is essentially a naturally-aspirated masterpiece in our eyes; and we’ve merely dreamt of throwing some forced induction into that 12.0:1 compression ratio-equation since we first got wind of the car.

Luckily for us (and you too), curiosity got the best of ProCharger as well, which is why they decided to develop and engineer a supercharger kit specifically for the Shelby GT350. The company put forth its knowledge of what they’ve learned with the 5.0-liter V8 Coyote engine, and they did not disappoint.

If you’ve ever been to Mustang Week, then the name Jeff Scofield should sound familiar to you. But if you’re not good with names, then his 1,250 RWHP Kenne Bell supercharged Shelby GT500 might ring a bell also.

Scofield not only owns that sinister all black '14 Shelby GT500 that's been all over the internet; he also owns an equally badass '16 Shelby GT350 too (and it's the first one to be ProCharged, so we've been told).

Pictured at the very top of this article is his Tech Pack equipped GT350 which is now sporting some tasteful modifications like an Accuair e-Level air suspension package, a Magnaflow cat-back exhaust, and a Lethal Performance cat-delete mid-pipe setup.

“We basically started off with a really low boost level; around four pounds of boost or so,” Erik Radzins said, in response to the tuning involved for the new ProCharger kit. “It made a little over 600 rear-wheel horsepower, which is impressive if you ask us. We made sure all of the hardware fit, because we had to make a specific intercooler for the GT350 to fit the front fascia.”

Radzins explained that the company used its tried-and-true P-1SC compressor head-unit as the brains for developing the GT350 supercharger kit, while the design of the intercooler used is truly a first.

“In regards to the intercooler design, it’s one of the best we’ve had in a long time,” he said. “Not only because of the way we’ve designed it, but because of the way the Shelby’s front facia is designed. These new Mustangs, even during drag racing, you can beat on it, and beat on it, and the IATs stay safe. The aerodynamics work very well on this car.”

Tuned by Palm Beach Dyno for more than 600 horsepower and 418 lb-ft of torque at the rear wheels, Scofield said he’d like to rev the ProCharged Voodoo engine around 9,000 rpm in the future, with the help of a built engine from the folks at Mustang Performance Racing.

To the untrained eye, you may not even know there was a supercharger sitting in this GT350's engine bay, thanks to the stealthy black finish ProCharger offers.

“It’s so different than any other form of forced induction,” Scofield said when asked how he enjoyed the new ProCharger kit. “It’s like driving a big block car; the power is linear as the RPM increases, and it just keeps pulling, all the way to redline. I love the added drama that comes with a forced-induction car.

I had planned on keeping the car stock, but like everyone else, I wanted to be different. That’s why I made the decision to go with the ProCharger. I’ve experienced most forms of forced induction in the past, but this is one wild ride for only a little over 600 rear-wheel horsepower.”

Radzins said that the kit will include everything necessary for GT350 owners to saddle-on nearly 150-plus additional horsepower.

“We’ve come along way from having four-speed transmissions,” Radzins explained. “Nowadays, especially on the track, with the gears being as tight as they are, we’ve noticed a lot of road racers really favor having a centrifugal blower. Even some of the autocross guys as well. Keeping the Shelby GT350/GT350R up in the RPM, and drawing out that long power-band and not spending a whole lot of time shifting, means you can really ride the power-band out with the centrifugal supercharger.

A lot of Shelby owners have started to look into centrifugal superchargers for track days because they are less prone to building up heat. They’re starting to realize after a few laps in, the car doesn’t fade, or begin to fatigue.”
