Today is a sad day, as one of Larry Miller’s dreams looks like it’s coming to an end.
Announced earlier today by Deseret News, Miller Motorsports Park has decided to cease operations on October 31st of this year. “On behalf of my family, I would like to thank all of those who have supported the track over the years, both locally and worldwide, for their enthusiasm and use of the facility,” Larry H. Miller Group of Companies owner Gail Miller said in a statement released by the organization.
In the press release, the Miller group announced that they have decided to not renew the lease for the land in Tooele County and close the track. There’s no word yet if there is another organization looking to revive the track after it closes later this year, but we can only hope that there is. The news came as a big surprise for County commissioner, Shawn Milne, as he hadn’t heard one word from the Millers about not choosing to renew their lease. “The report is absolutely news to me,” Milne said. “How unfortunate.”
Tooele County commissioners did, however, have a meeting scheduled with Miller Sports Properties and former LHM Group of Companies CEO, Greg Miller, for this afternoon. Milne said that this meeting had been in planning for three months, and it was supposed to focus on tourism expectations. Miller Motorsports Park will still remain open throughout racing season, and the full schedule of driving schools, summer racing events, public karting, and other group activities will still happen as planned before the heartbreaking news.
Miller Motorsports Park opened in 2006 and showed great success, but apparently not enough to keep it running. The facility lost the Larry H. Miller group of companies millions of dollars since it’s inception. It’s a shame that this beautiful track is closing.
