If you’ve got a hankering to jump into the wild, wild world of Drag Radial racing, we may have found just the ticket that you’ve been looking for. Bryan Byrd recently placed his sleek 2004 Mustang Cobra NMRA Drag Radial ride up for sale, and at a great price for what is being offered. Byrd indicated that there was no expense spared in the construction of this meticulously-prepared ride, and the spec sheet will back up that claim.
The buildup of this car was three years in the making, beginning as a body-in-white ’04 Cobra before being dropped off at the chassis shop to receive an SFI 25.2 chassis. After a couple more seasons of work, Byrd debuted the car at the NMRA race in Columbus in 2008.
Under the hood of this turnkey Mustang is a 358-inch small black Ford built by the famed Proline Race Engines, with a Dart Iron Eagle block, TFS HighPort heads by Total Engine Airflow, an Edelbrock Victor Jr. lower intake with a custom 110-degree upper elbow. It is fed by a Vortech Xi supercharger driven by a Supercharger Store gear drive and an independent oiling system for the supercharger with a Turbowerx Exa pump.
The drivetrain sheet is equally as impressive, consisting of an Art Carr Powerglide transmission with a JW case. The bellhousing, Dynotech chromoly driveshaft, and 9-inch chromoly rearend are prepared by Fast Chassis Performance. A Moser aluminum center section with a full spool, Moser 35-spline gun-drilled axles, and Strange brakes all the way around.
The chassis, as mentioned, is a 25.2 spec constructed by Fast Chassis Performance set up for Drag Radial, Extreme Street, and similar categories. The car has all sorts of high-end goodies, including Santhuff adjustable front struts, Afco rear double adjustable shocks, PA Racing chromoly K-member, and more.
The spec list on this car is much to long to write about, but as Byrd stated, it’s all high-end stuff that leaves little to be desired. During its short tenure, the car has turned short times in the 1.30’s with a quickest pass of 8.41 at 166 MPH after lifting twice. At a price of just under $50,000, this is one heck of a race car.
