Even though Steve McQueen has been dead for more than thirty years, he remains an American icon for his starring role in classic films like The Great Escape and Bullitt. As such, anything even remotely related to McQueen or his films can bring in big bucks at auction, with seemingly benign items like his Porsche racing suit bringing nearly a million dollars at auction.
Bonhams auction house will be hosting an item sure to draw lots of attention and bids, a 1968 Bullitt Mustang replica commissioned by Steve’s son, Chad McQueen. More than just an authentic-looking replica though, this Bullitt Mustang gets a modern makeover that makes it a lot more fun to drive.
Built around a Dynacorn replica 1967 Mustang body, but with all the features (such as side scoops and trim differences) of the ‘68 Bullitt. The front and rear suspension came from RRS to give the Bullitt replica a late-model feel, with RRS Phase II brakes providing better stopping power than stock. Sixteen-inch American Racing wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich rubber maintain that classic Bullitt look.
Under the hood is a Ford Racing 347 crate engine tapped with “Z” aluminum cylinder heads and tuned to provide some 450 horsepower. A JBA exhaust gives it that classic muscle car sound, and a T-5 manual transmission gives this Bullitt more shifting options than the original ever had. Just how much do you think this slice of Steve McQueen history (sort of) is worth?
