Founded in London in 1958, the engine and drivetrain specialists at Cosworth have powered everything from Formula One cars to the speedy Sierra RS to the original Focus RS. As an engine maker, Cosworth has racked up 176 wins in Formula One, second only to Ferrari, and in Europe the name is synonymous with performance, particularly as it relates to Ford products.
Now Cosworth is ready to make the jump across the pond with their first factory in the United States, reports Autoblog, selecting a location in suburban Detroit. The $30 million factory will be built to supply unspecified products to an unspecified manufacturer, saying only that the company in question builds “high performance road cars.” We wonder who that could be?
The three most obvious candidates are GM, Fiat-Chrysler, and of course Ford, as all three companies are headquartered around the Motor City. Ford is the leading candidate amongst the Big Three, as the automaker is already supplying 5.0-liter V8 engines to Cosworth for the revival of British automaker TVR. Ford also tapped Cosworth to help development of the 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine for the Focus RS, specifically the cylinder head design.
A memo from the Michigan Economic Development Corp. (MEDC) states that the new factory is initially slated to build V8 cylinder heads, but will be flexible enough to produce other parts as well. Although Cosworth USA is headquartered in Indiana, MEDC offered a $2.1 million loan that can be converted into a grant if certain employment conditions are met. Without getting too far ahead of ourselves, it seems pretty likely that Ford and Cosworth could be collaborating on something exciting for Mustang fans.
Dare we hope for a 345 horsepower Mustang EcoBoost RS with a track-hugging suspension and Drift Mode? We dare indeed.
