The world of today is a very different place than it was even ten years ago. Remember when Daimler bought Chrysler in a “merger of equals” only to dump the American company just prior to the Great Recession? Well it seems like the parent company of Mercedes is looking to form yet another American alliance, but not with Chrysler.
Rather, according to Automotive News, Daimler is trading technology secrets with Ford, getting a closer look at the award-winning three-cylinder EcoBoost engine. Might Ford products one day power your neighbor’s Mercedes?
That is a highly unlikely scenario, though certain Ford EcoBoost features could find their way onto smaller Mercedes engines going forward. The 1.0 liter, 123 horsepower three-cylinder EcoBoost engine has been lavished with praise and awards for both its efficiency and power. For example, in the European Ford Focus, the three-cylinder EcoBoost model is rated at 56.5 mpg on the European cycle. Yes, you read that right; 56.5 mpg.
For its part, Mercedes is sharing with Ford its stratified lean-burn gas engine, which meets stricter Euro6 emissions standards. Hardly exciting news, we know, but it’s pretty cool to see Daimler, a company with a flagship brand motto of “The best or nothing” turning to Ford for engine help. There really is something to this EcoBoost stuff after all.
