For a while there, it looked like Detroit had dug itself a hole from which there was no recovery. But now that the Big Three American automakers are making money again, the Motor City is on the road to recovery as well. Even so, car theft is still big business in Detroit, and with so many people connected to the car industry knowing the right people can lead to a big payday.

Or at least that’s what three would-be car thieves thought. But Click On Detroit reports that Detroit police, who were investigating another crime, recovered two factory-fresh Mustangs that had just been stolen.

We’re talking cars so fresh, they were still wrapped in the factory plastic. The police officers were on routine patrol and were investigating suspicious activity near Prairie and Dover streets when they spotted three men milling about an abandoned home in an unseemly matter. Acting on a hunch, the police looked around the house, and discovered two brand-new V6 Mustangs worth an estimated $40,000.

Officers arrested the three men (really no more than teenagers) and recovered three sets of Mustang keys, though the third Mustang has not yet been located. The cars do not appear to even have the dealership windows in them, implying that these vehicles were nabbed right off of the Flat Rock factory floor. Police think it might be part of a larger theft ring, and we wouldn’t be surprised if this was an “inside” job.
